The Capitol Police K‑9 Unit plays a vital role in supporting security operations throughout the Capitol Complex. Operating with a primary focus on explosive detection and public safety, each K‑9 team is trained in advanced odor recognition and is capable of detecting a wide range of explosive materials, including homemade explosive compounds (HMEs). In addition to their responsibilities on Capitol grounds, K‑9 teams regularly assist the Protective Services Division and partner agencies when requested, serving as one of the region’s few specialized explosive‑detection resources.

What began as a two‑team unit has expanded to five fully operational teams, significantly increasing coverage and response capability. The unit utilizes several working dog breeds—including Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shorthaired Pointers, German Shepherds, and Belgian Malinois‑type dogs—selected for their temperament, drive, and suitability for detection work.

K‑9 teams support daily security operations through building sweeps, vehicle screenings, package checks, and checkpoint support. They are also deployed during large‑scale events and in response to suspicious items or threat‑related incidents. Their presence enhances both operational readiness and visible deterrence.

As of 2026, Capitol Police is proud to field FDLE’s first dual‑purpose patrol K‑9, expanding operational capability to include tracking, criminal apprehension, and area searches in addition to explosive detection.

All K‑9 teams undergo annual testing and must maintain certification through nationally recognized organizations such as the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA), the National Narcotic Detector Dog Association (NNDDA), and other approved standards. Continuous training ensures each team maintains reliability, control, and operational readiness. Training and certification efforts are supported by the unit’s senior K‑9 handler, who oversees standards compliance and ensures all teams remain prepared to meet evolving security demands.

The Capitol Police K‑9 Unit remains an essential asset in safeguarding the Capitol Complex and protecting those who work in and visit Florida’s seat of government.
