HomeExplosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD)
The Capitol Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit has grown into one of the region’s most capable and respected bomb squads. EOD technicians meet rigorous professional and physical standards. Members must have at least three years of law enforcement experience, pass FBI‑mandated physical examinations, and complete a six‑week basic training course at the FBI Hazardous Devices School in Huntsville, Alabama. In response to evolving terrorism trends and the potential use of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), all technicians also maintain certification as Hazardous Materials Technicians.
The Unit’s mission requires mastery of highly specialized tools and technologies, including portable x‑ray systems, bomb suits, disrupters, and robotics. To ensure peak operational readiness, technicians participate in monthly training sessions and attend annual regional seminars. EOD members also provide instruction to public safety personnel in terrorism response, WMD awareness, and basic recruit training. Additionally, the Unit supports tactical teams and dignitary protection details, and conducts render‑safe procedures for suspected improvised explosive devices, incendiary devices, chemicals, pyrotechnics, and ammunition.
Today, the Capitol Police EOD Unit operates as part of the Big Bend Regional Bomb Squad, supporting thirteen counties within the North Florida Regional Domestic Security Task Force. This regional collaboration strengthens the Unit’s response capabilities and enhances public safety across North Florida.
