The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, with assistance from the Miami-Dade Police Department, arrested registered sex offender Ivan Varela, 51, for failing to report a change of address. Varela was arrested yesterday in Coral Gables, Fla. He was originally convicted in 1997 for lewd and lascivious fondling or assault on a child under 16 (F.S. 800.04) out of Miami-Dade County.
FDLE investigators received information that Varela might be living around Coral Gables, Fla. Investigative efforts revealed that Varela was residing at 1014 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd., Apt. 2, Coral Gables, Fla. His registered address was 894 SW 153rd Ct., Miami.
Laws require sexual offenders to register specific information such as their home address, current employment, and social media identifiers. Offenders register at their local sheriff’s office and information is provided to FDLE to be maintained publicly online.
Varela was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami. This case will be prosecuted by the Office of State Attorney, 11th Judicial Circuit.
