Michigan professor arrested for traveling to meet a minor for sex

Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigations, Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, arrested James Daniel Cavalcoli, 51, on Aug 7, 2015 for traveling across state lines to engage in illegal sexual activity with a minor.

Cavalcoli, a professor at the University of Michigan, was arrested in Weston, Fla. after traveling from Michigan to meet who he thought was a 14-year-old juvenile for sex. Calvacoli made arrangements to meet the child through an undercover FDLE agent, whom he believed to be the child’s father.

Investigators say Cavalcoli was in possession of multiple digital devices, including a personal laptop at the time of the arrest. Those items were confiscated as evidence and are undergoing forensic examination.

Cavalcoli was booked into the Broward County Jail pending transport to Federal Court in Fort Lauderdale where he will be charged federally.
