Tallahassee, Fla. - The Florida Department of Law Enforcement Office of Executive Investigations arrested Henry Kirby, 60, for one count of grand theft after he allegedly stole money from the FAMU Student Government Association (SGA). Former SGA coordinator of accounting and budgets, Morris Hawkins, 40, was also arrested on three counts of grand theft and 11 counts of fraudulent claims.
FDLE and the FAMU Police Department began a joint investigation in November 2013 after Hawkins, who was already under investigation, alleged Kirby also stole funds from the SGA.
Beginning in 2008, the SGA began selling travel packages to FAMU students to attend certain away football games. Students paid $90 for the price of a game ticket, hotel and transportation. Usually 3 to 4 trips were planned each year.
Hawkins admitted to stealing at least $7,500 and investigators found more than $6,000 in reimbursement costs he should not have received. Kirby admitted to stealing $2,000 during an interview with investigators.
Kirby and Hawkins turned themselves in earlier today and were booked into the Leon County Jail.
The Office of the State Attorney, 2nd Judicial Circuit, will prosecute this case.
