FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) arrested Jean Valbrun, 48, of Fort Pierce, on one count of felony battery. Valbrun was previously an officer with the Fort Pierce Police Department (FPPD).

FDLE’s investigation began on March 26 when the FPPD requested FDLE to initiate an investigation into allegations of an officer’s use of force. Valbrun and other FPPD officers responded to a disturbance between the victim and another individual. During FPPD’s investigation on scene, the victim was defying the officers orders and was arrested for obstruction. While being escorted to the patrol vehicle, the victim struck Officer Valbrun.

The investigation found that Valbrun used excessive force against the victim while handcuffed by punching him in the face multiple times and fracturing his nose. The investigation also revealed that Valbrun had removed his body-worn camera before striking the victim.

Valbrun turned himself in on May 2 and was booked into the St. Lucie County Jail. The case will be prosecuted by the Office of the State Attorney, 19th Judicial Circuit.

FDLE’s investigation remains active.
