FDLE Hosts Cybersecurity Summit in Fort Myers

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Fort Myers Regional Operations Center (FMROC) hosted the 2019 FDLE Cybersecurity Summit today

Roughly 50 people attended the one-day training/meeting. Attendees came from the public and private sector within a 10-county area that includes Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hendry, Highlands, Lee, Manatee, Sarasota and Okeechobee counties.

Most of the information technology (IT) professionals in attendance work for critical infrastructure companies, such as power plants, water utilities and large transportation hubs. Also invited were IT professionals from supervisors of elections offices, the healthcare field, governmental agencies and large-scale businesses.

The FDLE FMROC Cyber Investigations Squad coordinated the event and brought in speakers from FDLE and regional IT experts to discuss such topics as “Malware Threats Occurring in the Public Sector and Best Practices to Help Defend Against Them,” “Cybersecurity Compliance – Standards – Frameworks,” and “The Anatomy of a Targeted Attack: From Recon to Ransom.”

FDLE also discussed the agency’s cyber intrusion investigative strategy, ransomware investigations in Florida and domestic security cyber projects.

The goal of the event was to create a network of IT professionals within the Fort Myers region to partner with FDLE in an effort to identify present and possible future cyber threats impacting our region.
