Big Coppitt Key man arrested for gambling

BIG COPPITT KEY, Fla. – Agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement arrested Joseph Patrick Clements, 55, of Big Coppitt Key, Fla., on charges of bookmaking.

The investigation began in 2014 after Clements was arrested by Monroe County Sheriff’s Office after narcotics, and gambling ledgers were found in his possession. Clements used an online gambling site to facilitate wagers and set odds for sporting events. He used code names for his clients and met with them personally to exchange monies.

Following a review of gambling ledgers, it was revealed that Clements was facilitating sports betting for clients in excess of $10,000 per week.

Clements was arrested Friday, at Miami International Airport and was booked into the Dade County jail on a $25,000 bond. The case will be prosecuted by the Office of the State Attorney, 16th Judicial Circuit.
