SWEETWATER, Fla. – FDLE agents arrested three suspects on drug charges including Sweetwater City Commission candidate Jose Mejia, 29.  Mejia was arrested at his home, 11059 NW 6th Terrace, Miami, Florida, today on three counts of trafficking cocaine.   Also arrested were Christopher Laboy, 24, 3190 SE 122nd Avenue, Miami, Florida, on two counts of trafficking cocaine and Angel Berdecia Campo, 63, 10933 SW 4th Street Apt. 5, Miami, Florida, on one count of trafficking cocaine.

The arrest comes after a joint investigation by FDLE, Sweetwater Police Department, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.   FDLE began its investigation in October after receiving information from a confidential source.

“With cocaine deaths continuing to rise across Florida, it’s imperative to stop the flow of drugs into our communities, and these arrests will help that effort in Sweetwater,” said FDLE Miami Special Agent in Charge Troy Walker.  “I appreciate the hard work of our FDLE agents, Sweetwater PD and DEA agents on this case.”

“We would like to thank all participating agencies including FDLE for their continued hard work in taking dangerous criminals and drugs off our streets,” said Sweetwater PD Chief Placido Diaz. “We will continue to be transparent, and move forward as a newly accredited agency to ensure our residents are safe and our professional standards as a law enforcement agency are met.”

“As we know only too well, drug trafficking corrupts all that it touches,” commented State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle.  “The allegations contained in these charges are extremely serious for all of the individuals arrested.”

All suspects were booked into Miami-Dade Jail. The Office of the State Attorney, 11th Judicial Circuit is prosecuting this case.
