South Florida Agencies Respond to Pembroke Pines Incident

On Oct. 14, 2010 the Lauderhill Police Department requested FDLE’s Miami Regional Operations Center to investigate multiple complaints of official misconduct by Officer Elijah Jay Rodgers.

Rodgers, 31, died today at a residence in Pembroke Pines from what appears to be a self-inflicted gun shot wound. Pembroke Pines Police Department is investigating the death.

During FDLE’s investigation, agents learned that Rodgers had been involved in a Nov. 22 incident that occurred outside the City of Lauderhill. During the incident, while on duty, Rodgers approached the occupants of a vehicle in a parking lot in Plantation, Fla. Rodgers conducted an alleged unlawful search of the vehicle and subsequently arrested one of the occupants for a narcotics violation. Following the arrest, Rodgers allegedly falsified information in the incident report and the probable cause affidavit.

Based on the findings of the investigation, FDLE agents had probable cause to arrest Rodgers and charge him with one count of official misconduct and one count of falsification of official records. Agents were communicating with Rodger’s attorney and had made arrangements for him to turn himself in on Feb. 25.

FDLE’s investigation is ongoing.
