Correctional Nurse Charged with Abuse

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) announced the arrest yesterday of Elaine Wade, 48, of Clermont, Fla. after a three-month investigation by the FDLE and the Florida Department of Corrections’ Office of Inspector General. Wade is a nurse at Lake Correctional Institution.

The charges are a result of an investigation into an incident that occurred November 27, 2010 at Lake Correctional Institution during which a mentally disabled inmate was badly burned in the shower. The investigation found that Wade provided initial medical treatment on the day of the incident; however, she failed to properly assess the severity of the burns. During a subsequent check up the following day, she failed to document the inmate’s worsening condition and provide appropriate levels of care. On Nov. 29, the inmate was taken to a hospital where he was found to be suffering from first and second degree burns on 25 to 35 percent of his body, dehydration and low blood pressure.

Wade was taken to the Lake County Jail and bond was set at $2,000. She was charged with abuse, aggravated abuse and neglect of an elderly person or disabled adult, a third degree felony.

The Office of the State Attorney, 5th Judicial Circuit will prosecute the case.
