Palm Beach County Doctor Indicted on Murder Charges

A Palm Beach County Grand Jury returned an indictment yesterday for Dr. Sergio Rodriguez, 54, of Lake Worth, Fla. charging him with three counts of first-degree murder, six counts of trafficking prescription drugs, and nine counts of sale of prescription drugs.

Rodriguez was previously arrested July 30, 2008 in Lake Worth by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and charged with multiple counts of trafficking in prescription drugs and racketeering (RICO) and has remained incarcerated at the Palm Beach County Jail.

Investigators say that Rodriguez, then a pediatrician at Children Plus Health Center in Palm Beach County, knowingly distributed controlled substances, including oxycodone, xanax, and methadone, outside the scope of his professional medical practice and did not appear to be doing so for legitimate medical purposes.

The indictment for first-degree murder charges are a result of overdose deaths on the following three individuals:
  • Robert Bowes, of Port St. Lucie; died Feb. 7, 2008;
  • Robert Peterkin, of Palm Bay; died March 21, 2008; and
  • Robert Miller, of Palm City; died April 12, 2008
The FDLE and PBSO investigation has determined that numerous subjects throughout Florida have also died as a result of an overdose of prescription drugs obtained via a script from Dr. Rodriguez.

Rodriguez remains at the Palm Beach County Jail. Today’s charges are the result of a joint investigation by the FDLE Miami Regional Operations Center, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, and the State Attorney’s Office, 15th Judicial Circuit.
