Arrests Made in Identity Theft Investigation

10/15/2008

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Howey-in-the-Hills and Leesburg Police Departments announce the arrest of two individuals in conjunction with an ongoing identity theft investigation.

Al Walmer was arrested Tuesday in Orange County, Fla. and booked into the Orange County Jail where he is awaiting extradition to the Lake County Jail. A second suspect, Dave Ungate, was arrested on Monday near Dallas and is also awaiting extradition to the Lake County Jail. Both men were charged with organized fraud, several counts of criminal use of personal identification and several counts of grand theft. Ungate was an associate of Walmer’s and Ungate’s name and Dallas address were used on several credit card applications completed by Walmer.

Walmer was previously employed by Tuffy’s Auto located in Leesburg, Fla. He is alleged to have stolen the identification of numerous customers who had work done to their vehicles at Tuffy’s. Walmer had also worked at “Just Brakes” garage in Casselberry, Fla.

Two search warrants were served in Florida: one at Walmer’s residence in East Orange County and a second at Tuffy’s Auto in Leesburg. Authorities seized several computers from the residence along with a 2007 Honda Accord. The vehicle had aftermarket wheels installed which were purchased with a credit card belonging to one of the customers of Tuffy’s Auto. A computer and financial documents were seized from Tuffy’s Auto. Tuffy’s Auto is not implicated in the identity thefts.

Anyone who has concerns that their identity may have been compromised as a result of Walmer’s actions should contact FDLE Special Agent Supervisor Mike Giddens at (407) 540-3830.
