Former Pinellas County Roofing Company Employee Arrested for Grand Theft

Pinellas County, FL– Today, Barry George Smith, 48, of Palm Harbor, turned himself in to the Pinellas County Jail pursuant to an arrest warrant for second-degree grand theft.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement began investigating Smith, after receiving a complaint from T.C. Roofing, Smith’s employer. Smith was hired by T.C. Roofing to procure business repairing and roof installation in the Tampa Bay area, as well as supervise subcontractors who were hired to complete the work. T.C. Roofing alleged that Smith converted some of the company’s funds for personal use.

During the investigation, FDLE agents learned that Smith collected money from customers in the Tampa Bay area and deposited the money directly into his personal account. In addition, he allegedly withdrew money from T.C. Roofing’s business account for his personal use. Agents estimate he stole more than $60,000. As a result of Smith’s diversion of the victim’s payments, many of the victims, although they had paid Smith for the materials, had liens placed on their homes for nonpayment for roofing materials.

Smith was released on a $10,000 bond. The Office of the State Attorney Sixth Judicial Circuit will be prosecuting the case.
