Correctional Officer Arrested for Drug Trafficking

The coordinated efforts of the Florida Department of Corrections Inspector General's Office, Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Pinellas County Sheriff's Narcotics Investigation Division have resulted in the arrest of Correctional Officer Kevin Rix, 24, who works at the Largo Road Prison facility, located at 5201 Ulmerton Rd., Largo. The Largo Road Prison is under the supervision of Polk Correctional Institution in Polk City.

Rix was arrested by the FDLE and Sheriff's narcotics detectives without incident late this afternoon in a business parking lot in the 3200 block of Ulmerton Rd.

Following a three month undercover operation, investigators were able to determine that Rix provided drugs to inmates in exchange for cash. Rix was charged with unlawful compensation, introducing contraband into a prison system, and trafficking in cocaine. He is being held at the Pinellas County Jail. Please check the Sheriff's 'Who's In Jail' function on the agency website, for booking information.

"We are determined not to have the integrity of the department undermined by this sort of individual," said Department of Corrections Secretary James R. McDonough. "It is always a disappointment when one of our members gets involved in a criminal enterprise, but let me be firm on this; anyone that does can count on being brought to justice," the Secretary emphasized.

Rix has been working as a correctional officer since 2005. The investigation continues.
