Absconded Sex Offender Arrested in Jackson County

Pensacola - Thanks to the combined efforts and quick response of deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and agents from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), 59-year-old Charol Douglas Hughes, a registered sex offender, was arrested yesterday without incident in Jackson County.

The Florida Department of Corrections (DC) Web site indicates that Hughes has an extensive criminal history dating back to 1985 including several sexual battery convictions. Although he was released from prison in March 2002 and had been under community control supervision in the Tampa area, a warrant was recently issued for his arrest on a violation of probation charge in connection with a sexual battery.

By leaving the Tampa area, Hughes became an absconder from probation, meaning he fled from his DC ordered supervision and control. In addition, because he meets the criteria for designation as a sexual offender under Florida statute, he became an absconder from registration for no longer residing at the last address given to the Florida Sexual Offender/Predator Registry.

Coordination by an agent from the FDLE Panama City Field Office and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office resulted in the quick arrest of this absconder.
