Business Owner, Local Citizens Recognized for Capture of Band-Aid Bandit and his accomplice

8/8/2007

The Florida Bankers Association, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Florida Department of Law Enforcement hosted a joint ceremony to recognize the individuals who provided information that helped lead to the successful apprehension of the Band-Aid Bandit and his accomplice a year ago.

At today's ceremony, $30,000 was presented to Kevin Barnum of Victor Distribution. Barnum provided investigators with video footage from a surveillance security system and tag reader at his business. Additionally, two local citizens, Brett Van Hise and Robert A. Price received rewards of $2,500 each for helping to identify the brown Chevrolet Blazer used in the last bank robbery.

Rafael Rondon, dubbed the Band-Aid Bandit, and his accomplice, Emeregildo Roman, committed 39 bank robberies and victimized hundreds of employees and customers. The robberies occurred in multiple central Florida counties over a nearly six year period. On July, 20, 2006, their crime spree ended when they were arrested by members of the Band-Aid Bandit Bank Robbery Task Force.

Nearly a year later, on April 12, 2007, Rondon and Roman were convicted in federal court within the Middle District of Florida for their involvement in the series of robberies. On June 29, Rondon was sentenced to 1,794 months (149 years and 6 months) in federal prison and ordered to pay $676,873 in restitution. Roman was sentenced to 1,519 months (126 years and 7 months) in federal prison and ordered to pay $676,873 in restitution.

There were many contributing factors that led to the successful arrest and conviction of these criminals including surveillance videos, identification of the vehicle used to commit the last bank robbery and solid forensic, investigative and prosecutorial work. The reward money was provided by the Florida Bankers Association ($15,000), the Federal Bureau of Investigation ($10,000) and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement ($10,000).
