The Florida Leadership Academy (FLA) Program is a vital part of the Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute (FCJEI) located within the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Bureau of Professional Development. This program was created to meet the need for formal training of the first line supervisors. The FLA prepares first-line supervisors in criminal justice organizations to exemplify the character and integrity expected of criminal justice professionals, and examines the various components necessary to be an effective leader. Participants in the FLA will learn skills necessary to support the needs of their agency and needs within the community. The program also exposes participants to common ethical dilemmas in criminal justice and provides tools for exercising good judgment as a supervisor. Each unit of curriculum provides further insight towards proactive problem solving, effective communication, and related leadership skills. The FLA meets one week a month for a total of four consecutive sessions.
To date, the FCJEI has graduated eighteen classes of the FLA with over 400 graduates. Participants of this program include representatives from Police Departments, Sheriffs Offices, State agencies and Correctional facilities. Due to the increasingly large number of first-line supervisors in the criminal profession, the FCJEI Policy Board has chosen to restructure the program so that it can be regionalized and delivered through criminal justice training centers statewide.
A number of training centers from throughout the state have expressed interest in delivering the FLA. FCJEI staff is currently working with these training centers to schedule more deliveries of this program in the upcoming year. With the interest and support of statewide criminal justice agencies and training centers, it is our intent to deliver the FLA statewide at least three to four times per year.
