K-9

K-9 UnitCapitol Police currently utilizes one explosives detection canine (K-9) team to enhance the overall Capitol security. The K-9 utilized by the Capitol Police is a Labrador Retriever. This breed is well-suited for explosives detection work due to its calm temperament, strong work ethic, and its friendly nature with people.

The Capitol Police K-9 team is tested annually and has been certified in the detection of numerous explosive compounds by the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF).

The Capitol Police K-9 team is used to aid Capitol Police Officers in maintaining a safe and secure environment for elected officials, state employees and visitors to the Capitol Complex. On a daily basis, the Capitol Police K-9 team may be seen conducting checks of vehicles used to make deliveries at the Capitol, and conducting checks of packages being brought into the Capitol Complex through the established security checkpoints.

While the Capitol Police K-9 team strives to ensure the safety of all individuals within the Capitol Complex, the team’s visible presence acts as deterrence to any who would seek to deploy a destructive device in and around the Capitol Complex.
