Directed Patrol

Community PolicingCapitol Police employed the use of bikes with the Directed Patrol Team to advance Community Policing and to increase visibility at the State Capitol Complex and the Capital Circle Office Center in Tallahassee. Officers on bikes allow for quicker responses to emergencies and allow officers to disrupt crimes in progress with a stealthy approach. Officers on bikes have much easier access to congested areas than officers in motor vehicles and can cover a larger area in a shorter amount of time than officers on foot. In some situations, bike patrols have proven to be more cost-effective than motor vehicles and, in most instances, the bikes replace motor vehicles for patrol as much as eight hours per day or longer. The Directed Patrol Team attends special events at both the State Capitol Complex and the Capital Circle Office Center and has performed demonstrations at youth bicycle rodeos sponsored by local civic groups.
